Analysis of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act
Between late August and mid-September 2025, the parliament of the Maldives, or People’s Majlis, rushed into law the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act. The whole process involved minimal public consultation and attracted widespread criticism from both local stakeholders and international human rights organisations. In response to a request from local stakeholders, the Centre for Law and Democracy has analysed the Act against international human rights standards.
Maldives: Report on the Environment for Media
The Centre for Law and Democracy (CLD), in collaboration with the Maldives Journalists Association (MJA), recently launched the report Maldives: Overview of the Environment for Media, providing a broad look at the situation facing the media and journalists in the Maldives. The report is an updated version of a 2021 report by the same name prepared by CLD in collaboration with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and MJA.
